I know what you're thinking... celebrate your failures? But the reality is, your failures are a huge asset in your small business. Learn how to use them to propel you forward, and why sometimes a failure isn't a failure at all!

I know what you're thinking... celebrate your failures... what?! I'm serious. Hear me out...

I failed... and yet, I succeeded

This past week, I had a to-do list longer than I knew I could reasonably accomplish. Between a photo shoot for my website, tomorrow's workshop and the launch of an amazing new course, I was just plain busy.

When I was heading to bed on Saturday night, I sat down to reflect. On my to-do list of 15 items, I had only completed 10. In the past, I would have been devastated. I would have beat myself up about it. And I might have even pulled an all-nighter just so I could say I finished.

But here's what I've come to realize - when I only look at what didn't get done, I'm starting from the wrong perspective. You see, I actually got a LOT done this week. And if I dwell on the five things that didn't get done, then I miss out on celebrating the success of the ten things that are finished.

Do you get caught in the comparison game?

I think as women, we have a tendency to get caught up in the comparison game. We look around and see our friends on Pinterest or Instagram or Facebook and they seem to live these perfect lives. And we start to think that everything they touch turns to gold, and that they never have any problems.

We start to wish our lives were a little less like "us" and a little more like "them". But here's the reality... the reality is that almost everyone puts their best foot forward online. We don't highlight the argument we had with a family member, or the accident we spent all morning cleaning up. We don't showcase our bed head or the dirty dishes in our sink.

So when we start to compare, we have to remember that our perception of someone's reality is very different than their actual reality.

Is it a failure, or a learning experience?

Some of my biggest failures have been some of my biggest learning moments. For example, I once signed a contract with a nightmare client. {Obviously I didn't know they were a nightmare client at the time, but I did see some red flags}. While that felt like a total failure to me, the reality was, this was a significant milestone for me - it showed me exactly what to look for in future clients, and it taught me the importance of boundaries.

Maybe you started marketing a new product, and all you heard was crickets. Listen, I've been there. But the lesson I learned from it was what resonated with my audience and what didn't. It helped me to see how to better add value, and I'm a much better listener and a much better marketer because of this lesson.

So when you feel like you’re failing, remember that you’re just learning what doesn't work. And if you take the lesson and use it moving forward, then the lesson wasn't a failure - it was a turning point! Don't believe me? I heard someone say just the other day that the most successful people have failed more times than you ever will. And I totally believe it!

Don’t get caught up in what feels like failure, ladies. Instead, remind yourself that failure is the bridge you need to keep moving forward and that everything you’ve done up to this point is progress.

Your action item today: Stop living in the gap, and start celebrating your successes. Were you hoping to lose five pounds and only lost two? Celebrate the two! Were you trying to fill up a course and only sold fourteen slots instead of twenty? Celebrate the fourteen! Or maybe you're like me and you had way too many items on your to-do list. Celebrate how far you've come, and keep moving forward!
