Kiss cold and flu season goodbye with these tips! You'll be surprised at how easy it is to stay germ-free this winter!

It's that time of year again - cold and flu season!  And we busy mamas don't have time for that! So how can we stay healthy these next few months? Follow these tips from the experts for how to keep germs at bay {and check out this article from WebMD for even more tips}... 1 - Elbow bump, Fist bump, High five, or Hand shake?

ABC News asked a group of volunteers at the International Food Safety Training Laboratory at the University of Maryland to find out which greeting spread the least amount of germs. To perform the study, Dr. Richard Besser covered his hands with thousands of harmless E. coli bacteria. {The bacteria transfer just like the dangerous kinds of germs that can get people sick.} The results: the handshake turned out to be the worst for spreading germs. Drastically fewer germs were passed on in the fist bump and the high five {the transfer of germs during both of these was similar}. And the safest greeting... the elbow bump! Ha!

2 - Wash YOUR hands!

You may not be able to control what others do, but you CAN control what you do! WebMD asked several doctors what they do to keep from getting sick this time of year. Their answer - wash my hands and use hand sanitizer! One doctor said he probably washes his hands 40-50 times per day! {I bet he uses some pretty amazing hand moisturizer, too!}

What to use? Warm water and soap will kill the germs, but be sure you don’t rush. One nurse recommended sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to yourself twice in order to meet the 20-second rule! And always use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the doors in any type of public restroom.

3 - Get plenty of sleep

A 2009 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine shows that people who sleep less than seven hours per night are three times more likely than those who sleep at least eight hours to catch a common cold after being exposed to a cold-causing virus. I don't know about you, but that's reason enough for me to make sure my evening routine calls for plenty of shut-eye!

4 - EXERCISE for immunity

A 30 minute workout most days not only can do wonders for your physique -- it also might prevent you from getting sick!! One study found that postmenopausal women who exercised for a year had one-third the colds of women who didn’t work out. But what if you're already feeling sick? Make sure and perform the neck check before proceeding!

Bottom line - prevention is key! It all comes down to the basics. Eat right, sleep right, exercise, and wash your hands!
