When I first heard the phrase “done is better than perfect”, the perfectionist in me wanted to scream!

“Wait – don’t just give me done… give me perfect!”

I'll admit – I took it totally out of context.

I would imagine walking into a restaurant where the motto was “done is better than perfect”… I could hear the hostess saying, “Oh, you needed a table for four? Well, we can squeeze you into a table for two. Done is better than perfect, right?”

I imagined the server bringing out a salad with the wrong dressing. “You ordered honey mustard? Well this Dijon mustard is fantastic, too. Done is better than perfect.”

See, when I heard the word “done”, I immediately imagined scenarios with sub-par, sub-standard effort. But that’s not actually the true definition of “done”!

According to Google’s dictionary {which is obviously the gold-standard}, “done” means performed, thorough, complete.

And the reality is DONE {when performed well and with good intention} really IS better than perfect… especially if PERFECT is the only thing holding you back!

Perfect means “to be completely free from faults or defects, or as close to such a condition as possible.”  The reality is that type of perfection on this side of heaven is rarely possible.

As business owners, we can hold ourselves back by wishing for a perfection that just isn’t possible. We justify not releasing something because we are waiting until our fonts and colors are perfect. We rationalize not putting out content because we haven’t had “the perfect” photo shoot. Or we say we aren’t hopping on live video yet because we’re worried about the nonexistent bags under our eyes.

Focusing on perfection can be a socially acceptable form of procrastinating. And we often procrastinate because we are nervous.

I’ll be the first to admit that this is a struggle of mine! This past month, I decided to completely overhaul my website. And the finished product has been completely designed and ready to go for over a week. But I was nervous. “What if I missed a broken link? What if something doesn’t show up correctly on mobile? What if no one likes it…”

The reality is, there’s probably a broken link or two {in fact, someone emailed me this morning about a broken link, so I know there was at least one!}… but there’s also a fun new layout, new photos, new content, and it’s a work that I'm totally proud of.

If you haven’t had a chance to take a look, you can see the “final” product here: https://rachelmcmichael.com. If you can’t already tell, I’m thrilled with how it turned out. I’m also super excited about some incredible things happening this summer {including my totally redesigned one-on-one coaching program} and I can’t wait to share more with you soon!

Listen, if you’ve been waiting until “perfect” to take the next step in your business, I want to challenge you to move forward today! Go ahead – post that blog, write that article, send that email, or schedule that photo shoot. Done {when it’s completed with the intention of truly delivering your best} really IS better than perfect!
