I am SO excited about this week’s 5-minute book review segment.

If you haven’t heard, one of my goals this year was to read at least one book a week. And so far I’ve almost doubled that goal! But more importantly, I’ve committed to implementing at least one new thing from each book I read. Imagine how much your business would change if you implemented one new thing every single week?

And here’s the best part —

not only am I going to share what I read and what I learned, but I’m also giving away 10 copies of this book.

Here’s how to enter to win…

We’re picking 10 new winners every week! And I’m sure some of you unicorns will end up winning time and time again.
Back in 2018 I had the honor of hearing John C. Maxwell speak on stage at an event I attended. I remember adding his book to my wish list on Amazon, and then (to be fully truthful) forgetting all about it. This year, as I was lining up the Top 50+ books I wanted to read, his popped up and I have to say it did NOT disappoint. Here’s why The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is so good… You know those mornings where you just aren’t feeling like working? Maybe that never happens for you – but it does for me. Well, after reading Atomic Habits, I knew that I had to create a new habit – listening to something that would get me ready to accomplish my goals. Enter practically any book by John Maxwell. And with the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, I committed to listening to just one per day for 21 days. Each day I would turn it on and he would speak for 10-15 minutes about what a leader does… what leadership looks like — and at that point, I was so convinced that I needed to lead from the front, take action, and walk my talk that I couldn’t help but be EXCITED about implementing for the day.

Enter practically any book by John Maxwell. And with the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, I committed to listening to just one per day for 21 days.

This is a book I plan to listen to over and over again… and here are just 3 of my top takeaways from The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership:

#1

#1 – The law of the lid. In this chapter, John Maxwell explains that a person’s leadership ability will determine their effectiveness. Said differently, the lower someone’s ability to lead is, the lower their potential will be. When explaining the law of the lid, he gives a great example – the McDonald brothers. They were incredible single restaurant owners. They were making more money in their day than they knew what to do with. They knew how to fill the doors. How to cut costs. How to improve processes. But they lacked the vision to incorporate and franchise the business. Along came Ray Kroc who had this vision – and within three years, the company had sold its 100 millionth hamburger. Without leadership ability, impact stalls. To be the most effective you can be, you have to raise the lid.

#2

#2 – The law of process. Leadership develops daily – not in a day. In this chapter, John Maxwell shares the story of Anne Scheiber, a widow who retired from the IRS at the age of 51 and at her passing, willed a fortune to Yeshiva University. To the outside world, she was unassuming. She lived in a small, rent-controlled apartment, went to the library once a week to read the Wall Street Journal, but her estate was worth $22 million. How in the world did she build an eight figure fortune? In the 1940s when she retired she had saved $5,000 to invest in stocks. When it came to finances she applied the law of process. Becoming a leader is similar – we don’t make it rich by day-trading. Our success comes from continued habits developed and nurtured daily. What is your plan for personal growth? Do you have a daily discipline of personal growth? To be come an excellent leader, work on it every day.

#3

#3 – The law of the picture. People do what people see. If you’ve read or seen Band of Brothers, you know that the leadership determined the outcome. One example was Officer Winters. He was in front leading the charge. People do what people see. When leaders show the way with right actions, people see this and they follow. Just like our children are always watching what we do, and we can tell them to do things but they model our behavior. No matter what we teach our kids, they insist on modeling our behavior. The same is true with the people we lead. People do what people see. Nothing is more convincing than people who give great advice and set a great example.
These are just three of the 21 principles that John shares in this book in a way that’s relatable, conversational, and implementable.
